Tips for reorganizing your house for the new year

It isn’t time for spring cleaning. Right now let’s just focus on getting you reorganized after the holidays. You have decorations to change out and new items to find places for in your already crowded house. Luckily, the start of a new year is a good time to make a change. If you weren’t happy with how organized your house was last year, make 2015 your year for getting your house situated the way you’d like it.

Declutter

It’s best to declutter before the holidays because then you already have places to put new things once they’re unwrapped, however, now is as good a time as any to get rid of the extra “stuff” in your life. One strategy is to go through each family member’s belongings and bag up the thing you haven’t used in a while. Don’t throw it out, sell it, or donate it right away. Instead, put it all in boxes or bags and store it away for six months to a year. If you haven’t needed whatever is in those boxes by the end of your self-appointed time period, take them to Goodwill without even opening the bags. You’ll be tempted to keep whatever is in there, but you’ll already have demonstrated you can get by without it.

Revisit your closets

For a super-organized few, closets are neat and tidy places where every item has a place and you know exactly where each item goes and how to find it when you need it. For the rest of us, closets tend to be a bit messy, poorly organized, and overcrowded.
To make the best use of your space, go through each closet one by one, considering each item and whether it wouldn’t be better stored somewhere else. Get plastic totes for small items and label them with masking tape and a sharpie. Do you have tall shelves but few tall items? Install more shelves to make better use of your space.

Follow the rules of organization

Interior designers know there are certain “rules” for organization which make everything run smoother. For instance, items used daily should be in easily reached places. It’s like putting bath towels at the front of the cupboard. You can make lists of the items you use daily, monthly, and seasonally or yearly and then organize accordingly.
